Renting or buying: which makes sense?

Renting suits needs that have an end in sight or an uncertain length: recovery after a hip or knee replacement, the weeks after a hospital stay, palliative care at home, or the wait for funded equipment to arrive. You get equipment matched to the person now, delivered and set up, and it goes back when the need does. If needs change, you swap rather than being left with a bed or lift that no longer fits.

Buying tends to make more sense when the need is long-term and predictable, and when funding is involved. Alberta Aids to Daily Living helps eligible Albertans with long-term needs obtain equipment through vendors it has approved, after assessment by an authorizer such as an OT, PT or nurse. AADL does not pay for short-term rentals, such as recovery after surgery, and it does not reimburse purchases people make on their own, so talk to the care team before buying anything expensive.

How to choose the right equipment

Start with the care team. An occupational therapist or physiotherapist who has assessed the person will usually say what kind of bed, lift or seating is safe, and sometimes which features matter, such as a low bed for someone at risk of falling or a sit-to-stand lift for someone who can bear some weight. Their recommendation outranks anything on a product page, including ours.

Then check three practical things before you book. We ask about all of them on the phone, but knowing the answers speeds everything up.

• Weight: every bed, lift, chair, scooter and ramp has a manufacturer rating, and some state a total capacity and a separate patient maximum. A standard full-electric bed and a bariatric bed are different products, not different settings.
• Room: measure the space and the route in. Beds need caregiver access beside them, lifts need floor space to open their legs, and lift chairs need clearance behind them to recline.
• How long: a few weeks of post-surgical recovery points to different equipment than months of care in bed, where a pressure mattress may become part of the plan.
• Who is helping: a spouse caring alone, a family taking shifts and a home care team all use equipment differently. Tell us who will be operating it.

• EZ-ACCESS: the PATHWAY 3G modular aluminum ramp system, which stands on multi-positional base feet with no concrete footings.
• SPAN: PressureGuard support surfaces from Span-America, now sold under Savaria Patient Care.

What comes with every rental

The monthly rate covers the equipment. Around it, every rental includes the same service: we clean, disinfect and check the equipment through our 10-step process, deliver it, carry it in, assemble and test it in your home, and walk the patient and caregivers through how it works. While you have it, you can phone with questions, extend by the month, or swap to something different. When you’re done, we come back and remove it. We confirm any delivery or pickup charge for your address when you book, and you get an itemized receipt for benefits claims.
