Who this rental is for, and when it is needed
Threshold ramps usually come up the week someone comes home with a new mobility aid. A walker that glided through the hospital catches on the patio door track. The small front wheels of a manual wheelchair stop dead at the bathroom door sill and pitch the rider forward. A rollator user who used to step down into the family room now has to be helped every time. These are small edges that cause big problems, and they are easy to overlook until the first day at home.
They also suit longer-term needs where the main entry is already level or already ramped, but one or two interior transitions remain. A scooter user who wants access to the back deck, a person in a power chair moving between a kitchen and a sunken den, or an older adult with a shuffling walk who trips on a raised sill can all be helped with a single ramp in the right place. Families caring for someone at end of life may want one at the bedroom or patio door so a wheelchair can go outside on a good day.

The Modular Entry Mat is a rubber option for slightly taller edges. On its own it covers a rise of two and a half inches, and with optional risers it builds up to four and three-quarter inches, which can bridge a low step onto a patio or deck. It is 100 percent recycled rubber and rated at 850 pounds.
Each mat measures 24 by 48 inches. We look at how it lays out against your step before recommending it, because the footprint on the floor needs to be clear of door swings and walking paths.

For a single step of up to about six inches, the aluminum Modular Entry Ramp is the usual choice. It comes in 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6-inch sizes, which together cover rises from about three-quarters of an inch to six and a quarter inches. That range takes in a typical garage-to-house step and the step into many sunken rooms, though we always measure your edge rather than assume.
It is 34 inches wide, rated at 700 pounds, and has an extruded slip-resistant surface. The 1-inch steps above two inches mean the ramp can be matched closely to a single step, rather than leaving a gap at the top.

The Angled Entry Ramp is an aluminum wedge in 12, 24 and 36-inch lengths and a 36-1/4-inch width, rated at 700 pounds. Longer lengths spread the same rise over more distance, which makes a gentler slope.
We select the length after measuring the rise and the space in front of the door. As a rule of thumb, at the 1:12 guideline a 12-inch ramp matches a 1-inch rise, a 24-inch ramp a 2-inch rise and a 36-inch ramp a 3-inch rise. A higher edge on the same length is steeper than that guideline.

The rubber Angled Entry Mat comes in quarter-inch steps and can be trimmed, and the aluminum ramps come in sizes up to six inches. A ramp that meets the edge exactly leaves no new lip to catch a caster.
Rubber or aluminum

Honest about slope
A short ramp on a tall step is steep. At 1:12, a 3-inch rise wants 36 inches of ramp. When the edge is too high for the space, we say so and look at a longer ramp instead.
Delivery and setup
Threshold ramps are the quickest thing we install, but the measuring is exact. We measure the rise on both sides of the edge, because a patio door track often has a small lip inside and a bigger drop outside, and each side may need its own ramp. We check the door swing, the width of the opening, and how much floor the ramp will cover, so it does not end up where someone will trip on its edge or where a door will jam against it.
We fit the ramp, walk and roll over it with the person who will use it, and adjust if it rocks or leaves a gap. If anchoring is agreed, we fix it then. Threshold ramps can go in on the same visit as a hospital bed, lift chair or modular ramp delivery, which saves a separate appointment on a busy discharge week.

Choosing the right one
Start with the height. For a sill or patio door track under two and a half inches, the rubber Angled Entry Mat is usually the simplest fit, because it comes in quarter-inch steps and can be trimmed. For a garage step, a low deck or the single step into a sunken living room, measure first: up to about six and a quarter inches, the aluminum Modular Entry Ramp covers the rise, and for a lower step onto a patio, the rubber Modular Entry Mat with risers reaches four and three-quarter inches. Above six inches or so, a short threshold ramp gets steep, and a modular aluminum ramp with a proper run becomes the safer choice.
Then think about who is crossing. A power chair or scooter can often manage a steeper short ramp than someone pushing a manual chair, but the device maker’s slope limit is the figure to respect. A walker user benefits from the gentlest option that fits the space. And the shower is a different problem: these ramps are designed for doorways and entries, not for use inside a wet shower, so we don’t fit them across a shower curb or threshold. For bathroom access, ask an occupational therapist about options made for wet areas.
Paying for the rental
Threshold ramps are usually paid privately, and plans differ on whether they are eligible. If you want to claim one, ask your insurer whether accessibility aids or equipment rentals are covered and whether a doctor’s or OT’s written recommendation is needed. We provide an itemized receipt that names the ramp and the rental period.
If a threshold ramp is part of a larger setup after a hospital stay, such as a bed or a lift chair, we can list everything on one quote, which is easier to send to a benefits provider than several separate ones. For a workplace injury, WCB-Alberta requires equipment to be pre-approved, so check with your case manager first.

What size threshold ramp do I need for a sliding patio door?
Measure the height from the floor to the top of the track on the inside, then from the deck or patio to the top of the track on the outside. The inside lip is often small enough for the rubber Angled Entry Mat, which runs from half an inch to two and a half inches. The outside drop may be larger and need an aluminum Modular Entry Ramp. Can a threshold ramp work for a sunken living room?
Often, if it is a single step. Measure from the lower floor to the top edge of the upper floor. Up to about six and a quarter inches, the aluminum Modular Entry Ramp covers the rise. Remember the ramp takes up floor in the lower room, so check that it will not sit in a walkway where others could trip on its side.
Can I use a threshold ramp for my shower?
We don’t recommend it and we don’t install them there. The EZ-ACCESS TRANSITIONS ramps are designed for doorways and entries, not for use inside a wet shower, where water on rubber or aluminum is a different slip risk. An occupational therapist can suggest bathroom equipment designed for wet areas.
How much weight can a rubber threshold ramp hold?

Will a threshold ramp damage my floors?
The Angled Entry Mat comes with anchoring hardware for when a fixed ramp is the safer choice, and in many spots we can fit a ramp without fixing it down. Anchoring means fasteners, so we agree it with you before we fit anything. If you rent or live in a condominium, check with the landlord or board first.
Is a threshold ramp enough for a single front step?
Sometimes. Measure the step. If it is under about six inches and there is room in front for the ramp to land, an aluminum Modular Entry Ramp may be enough. If the step is taller, there are two or more steps, or the user pushes their own manual chair, a modular aluminum ramp with a gentler run is usually the better choice.
