Who this rental is for, and when it is needed

Shoulder surgery, including rotator cuff repair, is a typical example. If your arm is in a sling and lying flat or on that side is uncomfortable or not allowed, a semi-reclined position with the arm supported on pillows may be the only way to sleep. A chair with an independent backrest lets you settle on that angle and stay there all night. The lift also means you can stand without pushing up through the arm that was operated on.

After a hip or knee replacement, seat height and the rise to standing matter as much as the recline. Some hip patients go home with hip precautions: limits, set by the surgeon, on how far the hip bends, on crossing the legs and on turning the leg. Not everyone has them, and they differ by surgical approach. A seat that is too low, or a deep recline followed by sitting bolt upright, can work against them. We bring a chair size with the seat height your team asks for, and the angles you use stay within the limits they give you. After a knee replacement, the independent leg rest lets the leg be supported without changing the back.

After abdominal surgery or heart surgery through the breastbone, the struggle is usually getting up. Sitting up from flat uses the stomach muscles, and after heart surgery you may be told not to push up hard with your arms (often called sternal precautions). A lift chair brings you toward standing so the effort is smaller; whether that fits your restrictions is a question for your surgeon or cardiac rehab team. Others rent simply to sleep upright, because their doctor has told them to keep the head raised or because they breathe or rest more easily that way.

For nights in a chair, the useful part of this Golden model is that its two Comfort Zones are adjusted independently from the AutoDrive hand control. You can hold the back at a moderate sleeping angle and bring the legs up or down on their own, which helps when a knee needs supporting or a shoulder has to stay at a set height on pillows. The chaise seat keeps the legs supported across the join between seat and leg rest.

For hip and knee recovery, the Tall size puts the top of the seat 23 inches from the floor, the highest seat of the two chairs described here; Large is 21 inches and Petite/Small and Medium are 20. A battery backup means a power cut at night does not leave anyone stuck in a recline. Golden does not offer a zero-gravity position on this chair.

If a zero-gravity position appeals for sleeping, this is the chair to ask about: Pride lists zero gravity among the Radiance’s favourite positions, with the backrest and footrest moving independently through a true infinite range. Pride also lists Trendelenburg, which puts the head lower than the feet. After surgery, use that only if your team has said it is fine.

The overnight details are good. A lithium battery backup keeps the chair working in a power outage. A USB port keeps a phone charged within reach for a night-time call. The three heat pads warm the shoulders, lower back and seat; ask your surgical team before using heat near a healing incision. Seat heights run from 18 inches on the Small to 21.5 inches on the Large/Tall, all sizes are rated at 400 pounds, and the chaise is fully padded.

Same-day delivery is often possible when a chair is in stock and you call early, but for a planned surgery, booking a week or two ahead takes the uncertainty away.

We place the chair where nights will actually happen: close to the bathroom route, near an outlet, with a small table on the side of the arm you can use. The hand control is set to fall to that hand. Choosing the right one

Match the chair to the surgery. For shoulder recovery, what matters is a recline you can hold and where the controls fall; either chair works, with the Radiance adding heat and zero gravity. For a hip replacement, seat height leads: bring the figure your team gives you, which may point to the Comforter Tall at 23 inches or the Radiance Large/Tall at 21.5. For a knee replacement, independent leg rest control matters most. After abdominal or heart surgery, look for a smooth lift and a seat that is not too deep, so standing needs little from the stomach or the arms.

If recovery is expected to take a few weeks and you are otherwise steady on your feet, a chair is often the simplest answer. If your team expects a long period of limited mobility, or you will need help turning in the night, a full-electric hospital bed may do more, and some families rent both: the bed for nights and the chair for the day. If you weigh more than 400 pounds or need a seat wider than 24 inches, ask about a bariatric lift chair instead.

Paying for the rental

Post-surgical recliner rentals are usually paid privately or claimed through extended health benefits. Alberta Aids to Daily Living excludes short-term needs such as recovery before or after an operation, so it does not cover this rental. Some workplace plans do accept medical equipment rental claims, and they generally want paperwork. Ask your surgeon’s office for a prescription or written recommendation that names the equipment and the reason, ideally before the operation, while the clinic is easy to reach.

Check your plan booklet or call the insurer with the equipment name, and ask whether they want a cost estimate before you rent. If the surgery follows a workplace injury, WCB-Alberta must approve a lift chair before it is supplied, so speak to your case manager before booking.

Mistakes we help people avoid

Arranging the chair after discharge: The first nights home are the hardest, and scrambling for a chair then means sleeping badly while you wait. Book before surgery and try the chair while you are still mobile.
Reclining past your precautions: A chair can recline further than a new hip or a healing incision should. Your limit is the one the surgeon gives you, not the end of the chair’s travel.
No plan for getting up at night: Practise the stand before you need it: walker in front, path clear, light on. Night-time bathroom trips are when a tired person is most likely to hurry.
Letting the chair replace your instructions: A chair does not change what you have been told about slings, leg elevation or activity. When you are unsure whether a position is allowed, call the clinic that did the surgery.

Can I sleep in a lift chair after rotator cuff surgery?

Some people recovering from shoulder surgery find a supported, semi-reclined position easier than a bed, but whether it suits your repair is your surgeon’s call. If they are happy with it, the chair’s independent backrest lets you hold the angle all night, and the lift means you stand without pushing through the operated arm. Tell us which arm, so we set the hand control on the other side.

Is a lift chair safe with hip precautions?

It can be, when the seat height and the recline stay inside the limits your surgeon or OT sets. Precautions differ between people and surgical approaches, so get the specifics in writing before you go home: a minimum seat height, how far you may lean back, and how to stand. We match the seat height to that figure. If your therapist advises against a recliner, follow the therapist.

Will standing up from the chair pull on my abdominal incision?

The lift brings you forward toward standing, so you use less effort from your stomach muscles than you would sitting up from a flat bed or pushing out of a low sofa. How much strain is acceptable after your particular operation is a question for your surgical team, and your physiotherapist can show you how to stand with the least pull.

Do these recliners lie completely flat?

Neither Pride nor Golden describes these chairs as lying flat, so don’t count on it. Both recline, and both move the back and footrest independently. The Pride Radiance also lists zero gravity and Trendelenburg among its positions. If your team wants you fully flat, a hospital bed is the better rental.

After a knee replacement, should I keep my leg up in the chair?

Follow your surgeon’s and physiotherapist’s instructions on elevation, because they differ between people and change as recovery goes on. What the chair offers is control: the leg rest moves on its own, so the leg can be raised or lowered without changing how upright you sit.

How far ahead of surgery should I book a recliner?

A week or two before the operation is ideal. It gives time to match the seat height to any precautions, and it lets you sit in the chair and try the controls while you are still fully mobile. If surgery is sooner, phone anyway; same-day delivery is often possible when a chair is in stock and you call early.

Can we rent a hospital bed and a recliner together?

Yes. Some families use a full-electric bed for nights and a lift chair for daytime, especially when recovery will be long or the person needs help turning in bed. We can usually deliver both on the same visit and plan the room so there is a clear path between them.
