Delivering to NE Calgary

Medical Equipment Rentals in NE Calgary

North-east Calgary runs from Bridgeland and Renfrew, a few minutes from downtown, out to Saddle Ridge, Skyview Ranch, Cornerstone and Redstone on the city’s edge. Peter Lougheed Centre in Sunridge is the quadrant’s hospital, and Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre in Winston Heights/Mountview offers stroke and neuro rehabilitation a short drive from home.

The City has found that edge areas of Calgary, particularly in the north-east, have the highest numbers of multigenerational households. When grandparents, parents and grown children share a house, more than one person may end up helping with a bed or a transfer. So at setup we show everyone who will be helping, not only the person who booked, and we leave the equipment ready for whoever is home that evening.

Coming home from

  • Peter Lougheed Centre

3500 26 Avenue NE in Sunridge, about 15 minutes from our downtown address. Listed programs include inpatient orthopedics, the Neuromuscular Respiratory Clinic, the Calgary COPD & Asthma Program, an AADL test clinic for home oxygen benefits and an inpatient geriatric consultation service. It is also a hip and knee replacement surgery site.

  • Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre

722 16 Avenue NE, about 9 minutes from us. Its Seating Clinic, Neuro Rehabilitation, Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic and Rehabilitation and Community Transition Program see people between hospital and home.

  • SkyPointe Hospice

Operated by AgeCare at 179 Skyview Circle NE in Skyview Ranch, the only north-east hospice on the Calgary Zone hospice list.

Going home to NE Calgary

From Saddle Ridge, Peter Lougheed Centre is about 12 minutes by road, and from Skyview Ranch about 14. From our office, Bridgeland is about 6 minutes, Marlborough about 13, Saddle Ridge about 24 and Skyview Ranch about 26, so the outer north-east is one of our longer drives. When a discharge date is set, phone with the address and the therapist’s list; same-day delivery is often possible when the equipment is in stock and you call early. After a breathing-related admission, the team at Peter Lougheed may talk about sleeping with the head raised, or about home oxygen. We do not rent oxygen equipment, and the hospital lists an AADL test clinic for home oxygen benefits, so ask the respiratory team how that is arranged. A full-electric bed that lifts the head section is something we can have in place for the first night.

Stroke and neurological recovery may carry on after hospital at Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre. If that is the plan, ask the rehabilitation team for their equipment recommendations well before the discharge week, since they will have watched the transfers. Alberta Aids to Daily Living funds basic medical equipment and supplies for people with long-term disabilities, chronic illness or terminal illness, so it is worth asking the team whether the person may qualify; we cannot promise coverage. Anyone can refer a person to Calgary Zone Home Care, with that person’s agreement. We are independent of Peter Lougheed, Carewest and every other health provider.

Homes here, and what fits in them

NE homes fall into three broad groups. The far north-east is largely detached: Coral Springs was 90% single-family in the 2019 civic census, Martindale 83%, Monterey Park 77% and Castleridge 74%. Rundle (29%), Vista Heights (44%), Cityscape and Redstone (27% each) have large townhouse shares. And a few communities are led by apartments: Bridgeland/Riverside at 62% and Skyview Ranch at 47%.

A full house changes where equipment can go. If every bedroom is in use, a hospital bed may end up in the living or family room, which keeps the person in the middle of household life and close to the kitchen and bathroom. Leave one long side of the bed clear, and if a patient lift is planned, clear a wider patch of floor at the bedside for its legs to open. In a townhouse, check the stairs between the front door and the main living level before deciding where the bed goes. The ground itself helps. The NE is the flattest quadrant we sampled, with Martindale, Temple and Marlborough each spanning only about 11 to 14 metres between their lowest and highest points, which is a good starting point for a ramp or a scooter. Mayland Heights is the exception, at about 54 metres.

Discharge coming up

Coming home from hospital in the next day or two?

Phone us with the discharge date and what the care team has recommended. We book delivery to arrive before the patient does, whether they are leaving Peter Lougheed Centre. Same-day delivery depends on stock and the time you call, so the earlier the better.

Equipment rentals in NE Calgary: questions

Can several family members learn to use the patient lift?
Yes, and it helps. At setup we go through the lift, the sling and the battery with everyone who will be doing transfers. Ask the therapist whether transfers need one helper or two, because that is part of the care plan, and follow it even when only one person is home.
We live in Skyview Ranch. How far is Peter Lougheed Centre?
About 10 km and 14 minutes by road, without traffic; from Saddle Ridge it is about 12 minutes. SkyPointe Hospice is in Skyview Ranch itself, on Skyview Circle NE. From our office, Skyview Ranch is about 26 minutes, so call early on the day of a discharge.
Do you rent home oxygen?
No. We rent beds, lift chairs, patient lifts, scooters and ramps. For oxygen, ask the respiratory team at the hospital; Peter Lougheed Centre lists an AADL test clinic for home oxygen benefits. We can supply a full-electric bed that raises the head, if the team recommends sleeping upright.
My father is in stroke rehab at Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning. When should we book?
As soon as the team gives you a likely discharge week. Ask them what he will need for transfers, bathing and sleeping, then phone us with the list and the address. Booking a few days ahead lets the bed or lift be set up and tried before he arrives, rather than on the afternoon he comes home.
Our Martindale house has a few front steps. Do we need a full ramp?
A threshold ramp covers a door sill, a sliding door or a single step. More than one step usually needs a modular ramp, which comes in 10 to 20 foot runs, needs no concrete and can have handrails. Measure from the ground to the top of the landing and send us the figure with a photo of the entrance, and we will suggest what fits.
