Delivering to Downtown Calgary

Medical Equipment Rentals in Downtown Calgary

Our office is at 324 8 Ave SW, on Stephen Avenue in the Downtown Commercial Core, so the core, Eau Claire, Chinatown, East Village, the Beltline and Mission are the shortest drives we make. What sets these deliveries apart is not distance but buildings. Nearly every home downtown is an apartment, which means a hospital bed or a patient lift reaches the bedroom by loading dock, service elevator and corridor rather than up a front walk.

We rent hospital beds, patient lifts, lift chairs, scooters and ramps by the month. We bring them up, set them up in the suite and show whoever is giving care how everything works. Tell us the building, the unit number, what your property manager requires and what the care team has recommended, and we will sort out the move-in details with you before the truck leaves.

Coming home from

  • Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre

Urgent care around the clock for injuries and illnesses that are not life threatening, at 1213 4 Street SW in the Beltline, about 3 minutes from our office. Listed programs include a Stroke & Brain Injury Early Supported Discharge Program, Integrated Home Care consult and treatment, and home dialysis.

  • Foothills Medical Centre

The nearest full hospital to the core, about 7 km and 12 minutes from our address. Its listed programs include the Stroke Unit and rehabilitation clinics for spinal cord injury and brain injury.

  • Peter Lougheed Centre

About 11 km and 15 minutes away in the north-east. One of the three Calgary hospitals where the Alberta Hip and Knee Clinic prepares patients for joint replacement.

  • Rockyview General Hospital

About 11 km and 16 minutes south, by the Glenmore Reservoir, with an Acute Geriatric Unit and a Seniors Health Clinic.

Going home to Downtown Calgary

Coming home to a downtown condo after a stay at Foothills, Peter Lougheed or Rockyview means a short drive and a long list of building logistics. The hospital sets the discharge date, often with little notice, and the condo corporation decides when the service elevator is free. Call us as soon as a date is mentioned, and in the same hour ask your property manager or concierge what a delivery needs. Many buildings want the service elevator booked in advance, limit the hours for moving large items, and some charge a fee or hold a deposit. With that answer we can aim for a slot that works, so the bed is built and tested before the patient walks in. Same-day delivery is often possible when the equipment is in stock and you call early.

Care at home does not stop at the lobby. Palliative Home Care in urban Calgary is delivered in a person’s home, apartment or lodge, and it includes assessment and education for equipment needs. Calgary Zone Home Care takes referrals through Community Care Access; anyone can refer, provided the person agrees, and the professional and personal care services carry no fee, although equipment and supplies may. If a nurse or occupational therapist has written down what the suite needs, read it to us when you book. We are an independent rental company, not part of any hospital or health agency, so clinical choices stay with that team.

Homes here, and what fits in them

The housing figures leave no doubt. In the City’s 2019 civic census, 99% of dwellings in the Downtown Commercial Core, Chinatown and East Village were apartments, as were 97% in Eau Claire and the Beltline and 95% in Mission. So the questions that decide a downtown delivery are about the building: where the loading dock is, how long the service elevator is, how far the walk is from the elevator to the suite, and how wide the bedroom door is. A full-electric hospital bed travels as a head end, foot end, deck and motor, so no single piece is the size of the finished bed. A lift chair can be the bulkiest item we bring up, so mention any tight corner in the hallway.

Floor space inside the suite is the other limit. A hospital bed needs one long side clear for a caregiver, and a patient lift needs more. The Invacare Reliant 450 has a base 48 inches long that opens from 26.5 to 41 inches wide and rolls under the bed on legs about 4.5 inches high, so a platform bed or storage bed with no gap underneath will not work with it. In a one-bedroom unit that often means moving a dresser out, or setting the bed up in the living room where the floor is open and the bathroom is close. Most suites have no front steps at all, but a raised sill at a balcony slider or bathroom doorway can still stop a wheelchair or walker. The houses of Ramsay and the handful in Cliff Bungalow and Sunnyside are where an entry ramp comes into it.

Discharge coming up

Coming home from hospital in the next day or two?

Phone us with the discharge date and what the care team has recommended. We book delivery to arrive before the patient does, whether they are leaving Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital or South Health Campus. Same-day delivery depends on stock and the time you call, so the earlier the better.

Equipment rentals in Downtown Calgary: questions

Who books the service elevator in my condo building?
Every building sets its own rules, so start with your property manager or concierge; they will tell you whether a resident needs to make the booking, what hours are allowed and whether a deposit applies. Send us the confirmed time slot and any conditions, and we will schedule the delivery inside that window. If moves are only allowed at set hours, tell us early so we can line the slot up with the discharge date.
Where does your truck stop at a downtown tower?
Wherever the building receives deliveries. A loading dock or back lane is our first choice, and neither needs a downtown access permit. On Stephen Avenue itself we avoid the 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. window, when driving on the Avenue is generally not allowed. If your building has no dock, tell us the closest spot to stop and we will plan the carry from there.
My mother lives in Eau Claire and is leaving Foothills tomorrow. Can a bed be ready?
Foothills is about 12 minutes from our office, so the drive is rarely what holds things up; stock and the elevator schedule are. Phone as soon as the date is known. Same-day delivery is often possible when the bed is in stock and you call early, and the aim is to have it built and tested before she gets home.
Is Sheldon M. Chumir a hospital?
No. It is a health centre in the Beltline with urgent care around the clock for injuries and illnesses that are not life threatening, plus outpatient programs such as a lymphedema service and community rehabilitation. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
Will a hospital bed fit in a one-bedroom condo?
Usually. The Invacare 5410IVC full-electric bed has a sleep surface of 36 by 80 inches, a little narrower than a twin mattress and a few inches longer. Leave clear floor along at least one long side. Some families put the bed in the living room for the first weeks, closer to the bathroom and with space for a caregiver or lift. Send us the room measurements and we will tell you what fits.
