When stroke or spinal cord rehabilitation has been part of a Foothills stay, the occupational therapist or physiotherapist may already have named the equipment: a full-electric bed at a set height, a sit-to-stand or full-body lift, perhaps a pressure mattress. Have that list in front of you when you phone. From our office, Foothills is about 12 minutes, Varsity about 16, Edgemont about 19 and Tuscany about 26; from Tuscany to the hospital is about 18 minutes and from Edgemont about 13. Same-day delivery is often possible when the item is in stock and you call early, but for a planned discharge, book a few days ahead and have everything tested before the patient leaves the ward.

Palliative care has its own rhythm. Once a person is admitted to Palliative Home Care in urban Calgary, the service runs around the clock and includes assessment and education for equipment needs. Hospice is a separate step: only a palliative home care case manager or a palliative care consultant can refer, the family lists three or more hospices, and a transfer can happen very quickly once a bed opens. A family in the NW might list Agapé, Rosedale and Dulcina, all inside the quadrant. Month-to-month rental fits that uncertainty, because the bed and mattress stay while care is at home and one phone call arranges collection when the move comes. Ask the case manager about Alberta Aids to Daily Living and the Palliative Blue Cross Program as well; patients may be eligible for either. Homes here, and what fits in them

NW housing splits between older inner communities and newer ones further out. Montgomery was 27% duplex in the 2019 civic census, Mount Pleasant 26% and Capitol Hill 24%, while Hawkwood (92%), Scenic Acres (91%), Charleswood (87%), Hamptons (85%), Tuscany (84%) and Edgemont (81%) were overwhelmingly single-family. Varsity is the mixed case at 44% single-family and 36% apartments, and Point McKay is 60% townhouses. In a side-by-side duplex or a townhouse, find out early whether there is a main-floor room big enough for a bed with a caregiver beside it, because that decides whether anyone climbs stairs in the first weeks.

The ground matters as much as the floor plan. NW is the hilliest quadrant we sampled. Scenic Acres spans about 120 metres between its lowest and highest ground, Tuscany 111, Hamptons 89 and Edgemont 84, and Royal Oak reaches about 1,280 metres, the highest point in our sample. If a house sits on a slope, the front door may have several steps while the garage or back patio is nearly level, so measure every entrance before settling on a ramp. For a patient lift, look at the route from bed to chair or commode: a clear, hard or low-pile floor is easier for a caregiver to push across than thick carpet. And plan for winter. The City does not typically plow residential streets, so a sloped crescent can stay slick for days, and a clear path from curb to door makes delivery safer.
