Delivering to SW Calgary

Hospital Bed and Medical Equipment Rental in SW Calgary

South-west Calgary runs from the inner-city streets of Upper Mount Royal, Altadore and Richmond out to Signal Hill, Aspen Woods and West Springs, then south past the Glenmore Reservoir to Oakridge, Woodbine and Evergreen. Rockyview General Hospital sits near the middle of it, on the reservoir in Eagle Ridge, and for much of the quadrant it is the nearest hospital.

The south-west also holds some of the highest shares of older residents in the city, and a great many detached houses. Those two facts shape the equipment that matters here: beds set up in a main-floor room, lift chairs for getting up after joint surgery, and modular ramps that bring a wheelchair or walker past the front steps. We deliver, assemble, show the caregiver how it all works and collect it when the need is over.

Coming home from

  • Rockyview General Hospital

7007 14 Street SW, about 16 minutes from our downtown address. Listed programs include an Acute Geriatric Unit, a Seniors Health Clinic, Specialized Geriatric Services, inpatient orthopedics and a physiatry clinic, and it is one of the hip and knee replacement surgery sites.

  • Carewest Glenmore Park

Beside Rockyview at 6909 14 Street SW, also about 16 minutes away. Its Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation Unit, Geriatric Day Hospital and Rehabilitation and Community Transition Program can be the stage between a hospital bed and your own.

  • Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre

An outpatient centre at 1820 Richmond Road SW, about 7 minutes from us, with the Chronic Pain Centre, the Dr. David Hanley Osteoporosis Centre and a rheumatology clinic.

  • Foothills Medical Centre

The closer hospital for the western edge: about 16 minutes by road from West Springs, against about 19 minutes to Rockyview.

Going home to SW Calgary

A Rockyview discharge after a hip or knee replacement, a fall, or a stay on the Acute Geriatric Unit tends to come with instructions an ordinary house struggles to meet: keep the head raised at night, avoid low seats, stay on one floor for now. Joint replacements are scheduled ahead, and the Alberta Hip and Knee Clinic prepares patients for surgery at Rockyview, so there is usually time to book a lift chair or bed and have it waiting. If rehabilitation at Carewest Glenmore Park is part of the plan, use those weeks to measure doors, clear a main-floor room and photograph the front steps for us.

An emergency admission gives no such warning. Phone the moment the care team mentions a date; same-day delivery is often possible when the equipment is in stock and you call early. From our office, Lakeview is about 13 minutes and Woodbine about 23, and from Woodbine back to Rockyview is about 12. Ask the ward, too, whether a home care referral has gone in. Calgary Zone Home Care accepts referrals from anyone as long as the person agrees, and it charges nothing for professional or personal care, though equipment and supplies can cost extra. The rental covers the bed, chair or ramp; home care covers the visits. We are an independent company with no link to Rockyview or Carewest.

Homes here, and what fits in them

Housing in the south-west changes sharply from one community to the next. Woodbine was 87% single-family in the 2019 civic census, and Oakridge, Lakeview and Aspen Woods were all close to three-quarters. Braeside has a large townhouse share at 35%. Kingsland and Haysboro are roughly half apartments. The inner-city communities lean to infill: Altadore was 42% single-family and 19% duplex, Richmond 26% duplex, and Killarney/Glengarry 22% duplex. Each kind of home raises a different first question. In a detached house with a front stoop it is how to get in; in a townhouse or two-storey duplex it is which floor the bedroom is on; in a Kingsland or Haysboro apartment it is the elevator.

For the bed, many families choose a main-floor room near a bathroom, because the stairs to an upstairs bedroom are the hard part of recovery, not the bed. The bed itself travels in sections and can usually be carried up a staircase, but ask the care team whether the person should be climbing one yet. For the entrance, a modular aluminum ramp comes in 10 to 20 foot runs with handrails available and goes in without concrete. We design to the 1:12 guideline used in Alberta’s accessibility code, one inch of rise for every twelve inches of ramp. At a private house that is a guideline rather than a legal requirement, and gentler is easier in snow. Measure from the ground to the top of the landing before you call; if the front rise is too tall for the yard, a side or back door is often the better entry.

Discharge coming up

Coming home from hospital in the next day or two?

Phone us with the discharge date and what the care team has recommended. We book delivery to arrive before the patient does, whether they are leaving Rockyview General Hospital. Same-day delivery depends on stock and the time you call, so the earlier the better.

Equipment rentals in SW Calgary: questions

My father leaves Rockyview after a knee replacement on Friday. What should be ready?
Start with the physiotherapist’s or occupational therapist’s list, since they know his restrictions. Families are often asked to think about a firm chair at the right height or a power lift chair, a plan for the front steps, and a bed on the main floor if the bedrooms are upstairs. Phone us with the list and the discharge date and we will match each item to it.
Can you put a ramp on a bungalow with steps at the front door?
Usually, but measure the total rise from the ground to the top of the landing first. At the 1:12 guideline every inch of rise calls for about a foot of ramp, so a few steps can add up to more ramp than a short front yard holds. Our modular runs are 10 to 20 feet, and we can look at the side door, the back door or the garage entry as alternatives.
We live in West Springs. Is Foothills or Rockyview closer?
By road, Foothills: about 12.3 km and 16 minutes, against about 15.9 km and 19 minutes to Rockyview, without traffic. Which hospital a patient leaves from depends on where they were admitted. Either way, West Springs is about 17 minutes from our office.
Can you deliver to a retirement residence in SW Calgary?
Yes, with the residence’s agreement. Each one sets its own rules on outside equipment and delivery times, so speak to the staff first and give us a contact name. SW has many to choose from, including Chateau Renoir in Pump Hill, Wentworth Manor in Christie Park and Glamorgan Care Centre.
Our infill in Altadore has the bedrooms upstairs. Can a hospital bed go up there?
It can be carried up in pieces if the stair turn allows, so measure the narrowest point. The bigger question is whether the person should be on the stairs during recovery, and that is one for the care team. Plenty of families set the bed up in the main-floor living or dining room for the first weeks, then return it once the stairs are manageable.
