A joint replacement is usually scheduled in advance, which means the house can be ready before surgery rather than scrambled together afterwards. The Alberta Hip and Knee Clinic prepares patients for surgery at Rockyview, Peter Lougheed and Foothills, and South Health Campus lists its own Hip and Knee Clinic and Bone and Joint Central Access & Triage. Wherever the operation happens, the questions at home are the same. Can the person get out of their usual chair? Is the bed the right height? Can they reach a bathroom without stairs? Distance is the other SE reality. South Health Campus is about 29 km and 27 minutes from our office, the longest of our runs to the four large Calgary hospitals, and Mahogany and Cranston are each about 29 minutes away. Before the patient leaves, ask the unit whether a referral to Calgary Zone Home Care has gone through Community Care Access, the central intake. Homes here, and what fits in them

SE has two quite different housing stories. The lake and river communities are almost entirely detached houses: in the 2019 civic census Diamond Cove was 100% single-family, Maple Ridge 99%, Riverbend and Parkland 93%, McKenzie Lake 91% and Lake Bonavista 80%. Toward the southern edge the mix widens. Seton was 63% apartments while still early in its build-out, McKenzie Towne was about half single-family with a fifth apartments, and in Forest Lawn and Forest Heights townhouses made up more than a fifth of homes.

For a lift chair, decide where it will live before delivery day. It needs an outlet within reach, room in front for the footrest to extend and the seat to tilt forward, and a clear walk to the bathroom. In a detached house that is usually the main-floor living or family room. In a townhouse the main living level may be a half-flight up from the door, so measure that stair. In a Seton apartment, check the suite door width and ask the property manager whether the service elevator has to be booked. The terrain is mostly kind: McKenzie Towne, Lake Bonavista, Inglewood and Forest Lawn each span only about 11 to 15 metres between high and low ground, which suits a scooter and simplifies a ramp. Cranston is the exception at about 77 metres, followed by Douglasdale/Glen at about 42.
