  • Foothills Medical Centre

    The nearest full hospital, about 31.8 km or 31 minutes from central Cochrane. Its Stroke Unit, Tertiary Neuro Rehabilitation and Amputee Rehabilitation Clinic often shape what equipment a patient needs at home.

  • Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre

    On the Foothills Medical Centre site in NW Calgary, so about the same drive from Cochrane. It opened in October 2024 with 160 inpatient beds.

Going home to Cochrane

The nearest full hospital for Cochrane is Foothills Medical Centre, about half an hour east. Our crew leaves from downtown Calgary and needs about 39 minutes to reach central Cochrane, so a discharge in the late morning or afternoon usually leaves enough time for the bed or lift to arrive first, as long as you call early and the equipment is in stock. The central intake for Calgary Zone Home Care is Community Care Access, and anyone can make a referral as long as the person agrees. Ask the hospital team before discharge whether an occupational therapist will visit, because their assessment of the bedroom, the bathroom and the transfers is often what decides between a low bed, a lift or a sit-to-stand.

Semi-detached homes are common in Cochrane: 14% of occupied dwellings in 2021, beside 60% single-detached houses, 15% row houses and 10% apartments under five storeys. Semis and row houses often put the bedrooms up a flight of stairs, and sometimes a second flight leads down to a lower level. For someone who is 85 and just home from Foothills, a main-floor setup is usually the practical answer. Before delivery we ask for the width of the room you have in mind and the doorway into it, so a bed and a lift can both fit with room to turn.

The town climbs out of a river valley, and some lots slope. A front walk that rises toward the door adds to the height a ramp has to cover, so measure from the ground where the ramp would start, not from the bottom step.
