Going home to Diamond Valley

The drive from our downtown address takes about 58 minutes to Black Diamond and 57 to Turner Valley, which puts Diamond Valley among our longest deliveries. That hour is the main thing to plan around. A patient leaving Oilfields General is home in a few minutes, so if a bed or lift chair needs to be there first, call us the day a discharge is mentioned. A delivery the day before is the most reliable plan; same-day is sometimes possible when stock allows and you call early in the morning.

Oilfields General lists Home Care, so the local team is close at hand. Ask about a referral before discharge if one has not been made; anyone can make it with the person’s agreement, and Community Care Access is the central intake for Calgary Zone Home Care. If someone is coming home from South Health Campus or High River instead, the timing advice is the same: tell us the hospital, the date and the time, and we work backwards from there.

Homes here, and what fits in them

Houses dominate both halves of Diamond Valley. In Black Diamond’s 1,180 occupied homes in 2021, 72% were single-detached, 9% were apartments under five storeys, 7% were semi-detached and 80 homes, about 7%, were movable dwellings. Turner Valley’s 1,075 homes were even more uniform: 85% single-detached and 12% semi-detached. For an older resident who intends to stay put, the job is adapting a house they already know, rather than setting up a temporary recovery room.

That changes the equipment conversation. A lift chair in the usual sitting spot, a low bed where the old bed stood, a threshold ramp over the back door sill so a walker can get out to the yard. For a movable dwelling with steps at the door, a modular aluminum ramp may be needed instead. We ask about furniture that has to move, rugs that could catch a wheel, and the route to the bathroom, and we leave things arranged so the person can manage their day.
